Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Your Car Warning Lights

The flashing warning lights that may appear on your dashboard are indicative of an area of concern in your vehicle. They may alert to a malfunction, a broken part or something that needs to be assessed. Thus, it is never a good idea to overlook any warning signs that may appear.

We are not just here to support you in your search for second-hand cars, we are here for the whole journey. In that spirit, we have compiled a list of some of the warning lights that may appear and what they mean should something go wrong.

Tyre Pressure

The tyre pressure warning light will only come on to indicate dangerously low or high tyre pressure. If your dashboard is illuminating a yellow/amber light resembling the cross-section of a tyre alongside an exclamation mark, your tyre pressure needs some assessment.

Engine Temperature

If your engine is overheating, a thermometer symbol will light up on your dashboard. If this happens, park your car safely and switch the engine off to allow it to cool down as the damage repair on a vehicle with a burnt-out engine can be pricey.

Anti-lock Brake System

Your brakes are among the most important parts of your car, so it is vital that they are in tip-top condition. If your ABS light comes on, it may be that there is something wrong with the mechanism that keeps your brakes from locking. Braking with the ABS warning present may cause your brakes to lock and your tyres to skid.

Brake Fluid

The brake fluid warning light is a circled exclamation mark and may appear if your brake fluid is low, there is an issue with your brake pads or a sensor is damaged.

Oil Pressure

The oil pressure warning sign looks like a commonly known genie lamp with a small drop from the spout. The warning light signifies that perhaps your oil levels are low, there are sensor issues or engine malfunctions. Overlooking this warning signal could lead to major issues that will burn a big hole in your pocket. If this warning signal appears on your dashboard, pull over safely and contact a mechanic.

Car warning lights indicate where your vehicle is on a health scale, and ignoring them compromise your safety as well as the safety of others on the road. It is vital that any car owner knows what the warning lights signify and what action needs to be taken.
