1. Foreshore Bridge to beConnected to the N1

The unfinished Foreshore flyover in Cape Town could finally be completed after four decades. Connecting the bridge to a road that runs on to the N1 was part of a five-year plan for the city to alleviate its traffic congestion. The TomTom global traffic index released in March revealed that Cape Town was the most congested city in South Africa, surpassing Johannesburg.

2. Volkswagen South AfricaAchieves Highest Index Score of 113.2%

The VWSA Group in Uitenhage was recognised as the top Volkswagen manufacturing plant in the global network since 2015.The score of 113,2% was the highest amongst 13 plants around the world. All are measured on the same key performance indicators.

Key contributing factors for VWSA’sachievements were Polo and Polo Vivo production in 2015 at below budgeted costs, and targets to reduce energy and water consumption, and waste and CO2emissions.

3. 2016 - The Rebirth of the CarDesign Awards

The Car Design Awards have been a coveted award in the automotive industry for many years and this year marks its rebirth.The ceremony was held in Turin, Italy last month to award three categories, namely 'Concept Car' (Mazda RX-Vision project), 'Production Car', (Aston Martin DB11) and 'Brand Design Language' (Volvo Cars).

4. Automobile Association Callingfor Urgent Steps to Curbing Road Deaths in SA

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, approximately 13,000 people were killed on SA’s roads last year.The AA said attitudes need to change if the death toll is to decrease. Road safety in South Africa is a major problem due to motorists ignoring the rules, believing they’re above the law and will never be caught. They also have the false impression that they will not be harmed through their own reckless driving.

5. The Reintroduction of the DrägerBreathalyser

In2011, a court ruled that the Dräger breathalyser could no longer be used due to problems in the way tests were administered. This led to the acquittal of those accused of driving under the influence. Now after a five year break and there introduction of evidentiary breath alcohol testing (EBAT), the breathalyser is back in use as from 1 August in the Western Cape.
